Mrs. Mattie Stevens was born October 3, 1924 in Albany, Georgia. She was the daughter of the late Henry Garett and Mrs. Nora Garett.

She came to Jacksonville, Florida when she was four. She received her education from the public schools of Duval County. She resided in Jacksonville, until she was about 19, she then moved to New Jersey. She started working for Western Electric and retired after 39 years of service. After her retirement, Mrs. Stevens moved back to Jacksonville, Florida.

She joined St. Thomas Missionary Baptist Church, Ernie L. Murray, Sr., Pastor. She was a member of District #2, Deacon Marvin Ward, Leader.

She leaves to cherish her memory, one daughter, Gwendolyn (William) Manigault; son, Robert Henry Garett; sister, Mrs. Carretha Brown; grandchildren, nieces, nephews, a host of cousins, other relatives, sorrowing friends and the caring staff of All Saints Nursing Home.
