Mr.
Charles Alexander Scott was born on June 24, 1915. A Florida native, he was born
in Orlando Florida. He served in World War II as a member of the United States
Army and was stationed in the Philippines and in Australia. Prior to making
Jacksonville, FL his home for most of his life, he spent some of his years as a
young man in New York City residing in the famed Theresa Hotel and often
socializing with notorious figures and celebrities.
The son of Jessie & Claudia (Hill) Scott, he attended the prestigious Haynes Institute. He furthered his educational pursuit and was awarded a Bachelor’s degree from South Carolina State University and a Master’s Degree of Education from Florida Agricultural Mechanical University. During his pursuit of his undergraduate degree, he worked on several special assignments personally directed by educational pioneer Mary McLeod Bethune. He served for 32 years as an educator in the Duval County School District. Prior to being the first African American teacher to integrate the teaching staff at Andrew Jackson Senior High School, he taught at James Weldon Johnson Junior High School and Northwestern Senior High School. He was a member of St. Gabriel’s Episcopal Church. He was also a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc and the Masonic Lodge. In addition to his parents, his sister Mrs. Susie Mae Hargrove preceded him in death.
To cherish his memories include his only child Dr. Charneta Claudetta Scott, Washington, DC, daughter from his marriage to his second wife Ms. Venetia L. Mazeke, Jacksonville, FL; and a host of friends, especially devoted Family Friend Mrs. Maude Henderson, Jacksonville, FL and close buddies Mr. Henry McMickens, Jacksonville, FL and Mr. Lewis Taylor, Jacksonville, FL.
